Zimbabwe universities will on Saturday converge at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo for the universities sports association track and field championships. The Zimbabwe University Sports Association (ZUSA) track and field championships will torch the city of Bulawayo on Saturday as the academic students showcase their sporting prowess in athletics.
ZUSA president Liberty Maidza says apart from crowning the winners, the competition will also be looking at selecting the university squad for other tertiary sports games.
"As a university we have said this year we want to go beyond just being representatives in these regional and global games, so the track and field championships will be our base to scout for a strong team for universities this year. We are confident competition will be stiff in Bulawayo," said Maidza.
Tertiary sport has in the past been the missing link in contributing towards the growth of sport nationally, but of late it has assumed an active role.
Hopes are the active involvement of universities and tertiary colleges will soon change the sporting landscape as they will also be contributing to the various national teams.
