TRAFFIC Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) ambassador, singer Sandra Ndebele-Sibindi, has called on the Government to enforce a life ban on reckless drivers.
Ndebele-Sibindi's sentiments come after a horrific accident that claimed 12 lives when a bus failed to stop at a road construction controlled sign and side-swiped a Group Five International Company truck last week.
The accident happened at the 55,5km peg along the Gweru-Shangani road, just before Shangani River.
Ndebele-Sibindi said the Government should ensure that drivers caught on the wrong side of the law were dealt with severely.
"I am calling upon the Government to effect a life ban on drivers who are caught on the wrong side of the law because we cannot continue losing lives due to careless driving.
"That accident could have been avoided but due to negligence a lot of lives were lost," said the musician.
"Since the festive season, our roads have become death traps and a lot of lives have been lost mainly due to negligence.
"I therefore call upon motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads especially public transport operators as they are entrusted with the lives of travellers."
The Malaika hitmaker also urged motorists to always observe road traffic signs.
Ndebele-Sibindi was appointed alongside jazz musician Jeys Marabini, soccer legends Peter Ndlovu and Rahman Gumbo, as traffic safety ambassadors by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
The four were chosen because of their celebrity status in the city, which makes them ideal role models in their communities.
The TSCZ has pledged to reduce the number of road traffic accidents in the country.
A total of 1 476 accidents were recorded in the last festive season.
