Former National Social Security Authority (NSSA) general manager, Elizabeth Chitiga, was allegedly robbed of US$50,000 by her domestic workers while she was hospitalised.

The two maids, Loveness Chagonda and Bevelima Chiroodza, appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai facing theft charges.

Prosecutors said that in December 2021, Chitiga sold two cars and secured US$45,000 in a safe at her home. At the time, she was frequently in and out of hospital. When she checked the money in October 2022, it was still intact.

However, between that period and January 2023, the two maids — who were the only people with access to the room — allegedly connived to steal the cash along with other household property.

Chitiga only discovered the theft later in 2023 but delayed reporting it due to health complications. She eventually filed a police report in June this year, leading to the pair's arrest. Police recovered a red suitcase, bedsheets and other stolen items from the suspects.
