A-level top 100 schools - list

Marist Brothers Nyanga High School in Manicaland Province is the best Advanced Level school in Zimbabwe, having attained a 100 percent pass rate in the 2013 Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council Zimsec November 2013 examinations.

With an enrolment of about 550, the Roman Catholic school, situated some 36 km outside Nyanga in the Eastern Highlands, has  its pupils brimming with a new sense of confidence.

While in 2012 Marist Brothers (The Little Brothers of the Virgin Mary) Nyanga were beaten to the top spot by their provincial rivals St Faith's Secondary, the academic powerhouse has managed to climb back up the rankings.

Over 20 students at the school scored 15 points and above, with the highest Terrence Muradzikwa attaining 25 points or straight As in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Business Studies.

According to Zimsec statistics, the top 20 schools in 2013, which include Goromonzi High, St Ignatius College, Serima Secondary, St Francis Xavier's Kutama, Monte Cassino Secondary, Regina Mundi Secondary, Mazowe High, St Johns Secondary, Nyazura Adventist High, Kanongovere Secondary, St Davids Bonda Secondary, St Albert's Secondary, Langahm Secondary, Kriste Mabo Secondary, Chemhanza Secondary, Mutema Secondary, Pambe Secondary, Muzondo High and Kushingirira High; had 100 percent pass rates.

All the schools completing the Top 100 table attained over 90 percent pass rate.

The  majority of them are church-run schools.

Statistics released by the examination board showed a general improvement in performance by the candidates from that of 2012.

Esau Nhandara, Zimsec director, attributed the high pass rate to a wider access to revision material by the candidates.

Nhandara noted that many centres did not offer Literature in English as a result of a shortage of qualified teachers in the subject and the prohibitive cost of set books.
