Government stalling NUST completion, ex-VC

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in
Bulawayo only has seven complete buildings a key sign of being over
looked by government, former vice chancellor Phineas Makhurane has said.
He said he feels like returning to the institution he left in 2004 to raise funds for infrastructural development.
"You see there are only seven buildings on this campus right now. They are supposed to be 27. They are all planned and the sewer systems are all there. These are Government projects. The Government should finish constructing these projects" he told state controlled Chronicle.
"I am appealing to Jonathan Moyo and to President Robert Mugabe that, let's give a little bit of money to Nust to complete the construction of these buildings" he added.
The university has become synonymous with towering cranes as construction has long ceased with some of its buildings becoming dilapidated.
Reports indicate that the university is paying rentals of the cranes.
He blamed the sprouting of state universities countrywide for stalling construction projects.
"I think the main problem is that there was too much devolution. They decided that they must have a university in every province. As a result the universities are not benefiting.
"Places like NUST just stopped growing with no money coming in from Treasury. For how long can we have cranes towering in the sky?" he said.
In his 2017 budget statement, Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa announced funding for three more universities in Mashonaland East, Manicaland and Matabeleland South.
