FORMER Warriors star Khama Billiat has been linked with a move to Egyptian side Zamalek.
The winger, who turns 33 today, is a free agent after the expiry of his contract with South African side Kaizer Chiefs at the end of June.
He has been linked with a number of clubs in South Africa, Europe and Saudi Arabia.
Local giants Dynamos have also shown interest in Billiat, but it appears it is Zamalek who are now leading the race for his signature, according to media reports in South Africa.
An online publication, Soccer Laduma, yesterday reported that talks had already began, although a move at this moment was unlikely.
"Right now, they [Zamalek] are focused on keeping their main star player Ahmed Zizo, who is wanted by Al Shabab in Saudi Arabia," a source in Egypt was quoted by Soccer Laduma.
A letter purported to be from Zamalek, giving authority to some intermediaries to start negotiations with Billiat's camp, was circulating on social media yesterday.
NewsDay Weekender could, however, not verify the authenticity of the letter.
"Zamalek have been following his progress and there are agents and intermediaries from France who are working with agents and managers in Zimbabwe to potentially do a deal," other sources told Soccer Laduma.
"Now, it won't be a difficult one because he is a free agent and it won't be a problem dealing with the situation.
"They (Zamalek) have indicated that they would want to have him by September so that he can be part of their pre-season training. The good thing is that he has been keeping fit on his own in South Africa since he left Kaizer Chiefs."
The source added: "Now, we will just wait for Zamalek to finalise their talks with the intermediaries and agents. But, hopefully it will work out well."
Billiat spent five years with Chiefs following his move from Mamelodi Sundowns back in 2018, where he had won the Caf Champions League with in the previous season.
This is not the first time that Zamalek have shown interest in the former Warriors star.
In 2017, the club, together with fellow Egyptian giant Al Ahli, reportedly engaged Billiat following his brilliant run in the Champions League that season when he led the Brazilians to the title, but their efforts were in vain as he chose to remain in South Africa.
