A man from Lupane in Matebeleland North is currently evading law enforcement after allegedly brutally murdering his parents during a family gathering last week.
Clever Ngwenga (35), a resident of Gwalubha village, is accused of slitting the throats of his mother, Mildress Ngwenya (71), and his father, Simon Ngwenya (73), for reasons that remain unknown.
During the attack, Ngwenga also allegedly attempted to kill his two brothers but was unsuccessful in his efforts.
According to the police statement released, "Police in Lupane are appealing for information, which may lead to the arrest of Clever Ngwenya (35) who is being sought for callously killing his parents, Mildress Ngwenya (71) and Simon Ngwenya (73), for an unknown reason while attending a family gathering at Gwalubha Village, Mabhikwa on September 21. The suspect stabbed his mother, Mildress Ngwenya, with a knife on the throat before stabbing his father, Simon Ngwenya, on the throat with the same knife. The suspect went on to chase his two brothers with the intention of stabbing them with the knife, but was outpaced."
In a separate incident, police are also seeking information regarding the murder of a Mazowe woman during a robbery at a gold panning site. Marbel Magurambinga (39) was reportedly stabbed in the thigh with a knife by three unidentified suspects who subsequently stole US$350 from her at the gold panning site located at Folyle Farm. Despite efforts to get medical attention, Magurambinga succumbed to her injuries on her way to the hospital.
The Zimbabwean police have been grappling with violent crimes at illegal mining sites across the country, where gangs often employ machetes to terrorize citizens. Law enforcement has initiated various operations to address this issue, but allegations persist that some of these gangs are influenced or controlled by politicians seeking to protect their interests in these areas.
