Police have arrested three suspected cybercriminals accused of masterminding a nationwide phishing and mobile money fraud syndicate that defrauded dozens of victims of more than US$17,000 and ZiG30 million.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests, identifying the suspects as Tranos Taurai Muzanenhamo (27), Rumbidzai Tsongora (24), and Bradwell Shangwa (25).

"Police in Shurugwi arrested three suspects believed to be part of a sophisticated cybercrime syndicate that defrauded dozens of victims across the country through phishing scams and mobile money fraud," said Comm Nyathi.

The trio was apprehended on Friday while hiding at a local lodge in Shurugwi. Police recovered several items believed to have been used in the scams - including a Toyota Mark X, fake national IDs, multiple SIM cards, cellphones, bank cards, handcuffs, and a Starlink internet device allegedly used to mask their online activities.

Comm Nyathi said preliminary investigations showed the syndicate used phishing emails, fake links, and data breaches to steal victims' personal information. They would then impersonate victims to obtain SIM replacements, take control of phone numbers, and access mobile money and bank accounts, as well as WhatsApp profiles to solicit funds from contacts.

"These suspects were using advanced methods to steal people's identities and funds. We urge citizens to protect their personal data and verify communications before responding," said Comm Nyathi.

The gang is linked to more than 29 cases of cyber-fraud reported in Harare, Bulawayo, and other towns.

The suspects remain in custody while investigations continue, with police warning that cybercrime cases are on the rise and urging the public to report suspicious online activities.
