The Ministry of Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of National Culture and Heritage has approved an increase in the monthly allowances of rural district councillors with a chairman now earning $230 per month.

The allowances are effective from July1, 2016.

According to a letter forwarded to all Council Chief Executive Officers by the Ministry and presented during a full council meeting held at Chivi RDC offices last Friday the Council Chairperson will now pocket $230 per month, up from $170.

The deputy chairperson will get US$185 from $140, committee chairperson US$160 from $115 and an ordinary councillor will pocket $140 from $100.

The letter also states that councillors shall be paid travelling and subsistence allowances as and when they attend council and committee meetings.

Ward 7 councillor Taurai Masvinu who is also chairperson of the Finance Committee said as councillors, they welcome the increases in allowances which he said was a way of recognising the councillors for the hard work they are doing for the district.

"Though the ministry is taking care of our welfare, we feel that our allowances are still  low.

"In Chivi there are 32 ward councillors and they are doing a lot for the people in their wards voluntarily and they must be recognised through allowance increase," said Masvinu.
