Traditional leaders say the Heroes Day celebrations should serve as a reminder to all Zimbabweans of the thousands of sons and daughters of the soil who made supreme sacrifices to free the country from the shackles of colonialism. The Deputy President of the Chiefs Council, Chief Mtshane Khumalo and Chief Chisunga from Mashonaland Central Province say the fact that Zimbabweans now have total control of land is reason enough to honour the sons and daughters of the soil who sacrificed their lives to bring freedom to Zimbabwe.
"We have land which should be owed to the heroes, those who died in and out of the country and those who are alive. We have the land and we should respect them because they made supreme sacrifices," both Chiefs concurred.
Chief Chiduku of Rusape and Chief Shana of Hwange said young people should be taught to value the heroes and heroines of Zimbabwe as they assisted in ensuring that Zimbabwe attains its sovereignty.
"We have young people who have to be taught about the virtues of the heroes," said Chiefs Chiduku and Shana.
The country will next Monday commemorate Heroes Day, a day set aside to honour those who made contributions to the liberation of Zimbabwe.
Preparations for the day are progressing well and the national event will be held at the national shrine in the capital.
