Police shoot at lockdown violators

POLICE in Mvurwi on Monday had to shoot at alleged violators of Covid-19 lockdown measures to stop them from fleeing.
No one was injured.
The alleged violators were gathered at a homestead in Mvurwi, Mashonaland Central.
Two suspects tried to flee in a vehicle from the homestead at the arrival of the police.
Warning shots were fired, but the suspects did not stop and attempted to run over one of the cops.
This prompted the police to deflate the tyres and subsequently arrested the suspects.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating circumstances surrounding a shooting incident which occurred on February 1 2021 in Mvurwi where two suspects were arrested following a speed chase.
"Members of the police attended a crime scene following a tip off involving a gathering in clear violation of the government's national lockdown regulations at a certain homestead.
"Some of the suspects drove off at high speed after noticing the police (sic)," the police said in a statement last night.
"A Honda Prelude motor vehicle with three suspects remained at the scene and was later driven towards one of the police officers at high speed attempting to hit him.
"Other police officers pursued the suspects, fired warning shots and ordered the suspects to stop, but to no avail.
"Police shot two left tyres of the suspects' vehicle and managed to arrest two suspects who were found in possession of dagga.
"Investigations are in progress and the arrested suspects are assisting the police with investigations."
Meanwhile, police in Chiredzi have arrested two suspected drug dealers at Masekesa Growth Point and allegedly found them in possession of 146,2kg of dagga.
Luckson Munhukwaye and Phyllis Mufandaedza were intercepted by the police along Ngundu-Tanganda Road and found with the drug.
Drug peddling is rampant in the country.
