A new youth movement, the United Youth Movement, has been launched with the aim of challenging what it describes as systemic repression that has left many young Zimbabweans without job opportunities, economic security or meaningful participation in national affairs.

In a statement, the organisation said it was introducing “a new discourse and a new platform” for young people across the country, describing the initiative as a call to unity and a push for real freedom.

“Young people in Zimbabwe are living through a defining moment in our nation’s history,” the movement said.

“We are growing up in a time marked by political uncertainty, a deep governance crisis, mass unemployment, unaffordable education and healthcare, shrinking civic space, and limited opportunities for meaningful participation.”

The movement said these challenges had denied young people their dreams, dignity and rightful place in shaping the country’s future.

“This is not a partisan space,” the statement added. “It is a national youth platform that belongs to everyone, regardless of background, political affiliation, social status or walk of life. It is rooted in inclusion, dialogue, creativity and decisive action.”

The United Youth Movement said its mission was to unite young people, rebuild hope and reclaim collective power, noting that the problems facing the youth were systemic and rooted in governance failures.

“But we also understand our strength. We are not merely victims of circumstance — we are a generation capable of transformation,” the movement said.

It announced plans to roll out a programme of action in the coming weeks, engaging young people across all sectors and communities.

“We will engage every young person: from street level to campuses, from informal settlements to workplaces, from artists to entrepreneurs, from activists to faith communities, from rural villages to urban centres. No voice is too small. No community is too remote. No young person is irrelevant.”

The movement described itself as a call to unity and collective action.

“Now is the time. We are the Denied Generation — #GenD — but we refuse to be a defeated generation,” the statement read.
