Zanu PF orders church services to be suspended for rally

The ruling ZANU PF party in Mudzi District is facing backlash after reportedly ordering the suspension of church services to facilitate a political rally promoting Constitutional Amendment No. 3.

The controversial directive, contained in a leaked letter dated March 25, instructed churches to cancel services on Sunday, March 29, and encourage congregants to attend a party gathering at Kotwa High School.

The meeting is set to be addressed by Daniel Garwe, who is also the party's provincial chairperson for Mashonaland East.

The proposed constitutional amendment seeks, among other changes, to extend the term of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, postpone the 2028 elections, and prolong the tenure of sitting legislators and councillors by two years.

The letter, signed by district coordinating committee chairperson M. Mashonganyika, described the rally as an "important meeting" and urged church leaders to prioritise attendance.

Sources said party officials warned of unspecified consequences for any church leaders who defy the directive.

The development has triggered outrage among worshippers and political observers, who accuse the ruling party of overreach and undermining fundamental freedoms.

Critics argue that compelling citizens to abandon religious services in favour of a political event infringes on rights to freedom of worship and association.

"This is a clear case of political intolerance and abuse of power," said one opposition activist, who declined to be named.

The incident has reignited debate over the shrinking democratic space in Zimbabwe, with concerns that political mobilisation efforts around the proposed constitutional changes are increasingly encroaching on civil liberties.

Observers say the controversy highlights growing tensions as the government intensifies its campaign to build support for the amendment, which remains one of the most contentious political issues in the country.
