Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Advocate Felix Tapiwa Mhona has urged motorists to avoid speeding on newly constructed roads, warning that reckless driving is causing fatal accidents.

Speaking at the official opening of the newly built 110‑metre Manyame River Bridge in Harare, Mhona said some motorists were becoming "over‑excited" by the improved road network and were endangering lives through excessive speed.

"We are happy with the work being done under the Second Republic led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. As per our tradition, we are making our roads more accessible, but motorists are getting over‑excited and causing fatal accidents. We are saddened," Mhona said.

The minister also called on the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe to help curb the growing number of vendors operating along highways by ensuring fenced road boundaries.

"We are not happy with vendors who are mushrooming on highways. I think the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe should assist us by putting fencing boundaries along major roads," he added.

The Manyame River Bridge, spanning 110 metres, forms part of one of Zimbabwe’s most commercially vital transport corridors, easing a long‑standing bottleneck that had constrained the movement of goods and people between Harare and the southern border.

On a route used by freight hauliers, commuters, cross‑border traders and regional transit traffic, the dual carriageway and its new bridge represent a significant upgrade to the country’s transport infrastructure.

Engineer Benjamin Bara, Piling Manager for Tensor, the contractor responsible for the project, said the foundation work alone broke new ground for Zimbabwean civil engineering, underscoring the technical ambition behind the structure.
