Zimbabweans returning from South Africa under the government-assisted repatriation programme will now benefit from faster processing at Beitbridge Border Post following the introduction of a dedicated clearance channel designed to reduce delays.

The special arrangement, known as the "green route", forms part of measures aimed at managing the growing number of returnees while easing congestion at Zimbabwe's busiest land border.

Zimborders manager Nqobile Ncube said the initiative was introduced to separate government-assisted returnees from regular travellers, enabling border officials to process them more efficiently.

"The green route is meant to assist with the smooth movement of Zimbabweans who are coming back home through the repatriation programme. We want to make sure that they are attended to efficiently without creating unnecessary congestion at the border," said Ncube.

He noted that Beitbridge Border Post handles thousands of travellers daily and regularly experiences heavy traffic, making it necessary for authorities to introduce new operational measures whenever passenger volumes increase.

"Beitbridge handles large numbers of people every day, and whenever there are additional movements, especially during organised return programmes, we have to put in place measures that allow us to respond effectively," he said.

According to Ncube, the dedicated route will improve coordination among border agencies while ensuring returning Zimbabweans receive the necessary assistance without disrupting normal border operations.

"The idea is not only to reduce congestion but also to ensure that people returning home are treated with dignity and processed without unnecessary delays," he said.

He added that Zimborders would continue reviewing and upgrading systems at Beitbridge Border Post to improve service delivery as passenger numbers continue to grow.

"We continue to review our operations and introduce measures that improve the experience of travellers using the border post. Efficiency, safety and proper coordination remain our key priorities," said Ncube.

The introduction of the green route comes as the government continues facilitating the return of thousands of Zimbabweans from South Africa under its repatriation programme, with Beitbridge remaining the primary entry point for returning citizens.
