The Hwange Local Board (HLB) has urged residents to take precautions against extreme heat amid concerns over high temperatures associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon.
In a public awareness notice, the local authority advised residents to drink water regularly, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day where possible, and watch for signs of heatstroke.
"Stay hydrated! Drink water every hour," HLB said, also advising residents to avoid wearing black clothing during periods of extreme heat.
The local authority warned that heatstroke requires urgent attention, urging residents to cool the affected person and seek medical assistance immediately.
"If heatstroke occurs, cool the body and get to a hospital fast," HLB said, encouraging residents to share the safety message with family members and friends.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon that can influence rainfall and temperature patterns in different parts of the world. Its effects vary by region and season, although certain conditions can contribute to hotter and drier weather.
Residents have been encouraged to remain alert during periods of extreme heat, particularly when spending extended periods outdoors.
