A lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University yesterday appeared before a Masvingo magistrate facing charges of insulting President Mugabe.

Chenjerai Pamhirwa, of house number 3392 Muchecheni Street in Rujeko Surburb, a music and musicology lecturer, was hauled before local magistrate Langton Ndokera facing charges of labelling President Robert Mugabe "an impotent wife-snatcher".

Pamhiri allegedly uttering the words at Chemberi Bar in Mushava on September 2.

He appeared for initial remand before magistrate Langton Ndokera on Monday facing a charge of undermining the authority of, or insulting the President, as defined in Section 33 (2) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. Pamhiri, represented by Philip Shumba of Mutendi and Shumba Law firm, was remanded out of custody to September 20.

Appearing for the State, Shamiso Masokovere told the court that at around 12:30pm, Pamhiri, at a beer drink, saw Antony Muvha wearing a Zanu-PF T-shirt emblazoned with Mugabe's picture.

Pamhirwa is alleged to have shouted obscenities after meeting a reveller Antony Muvha who was wearing a Zanu-PF T-shirt with Mugabe's face telling he was stupid because he supported Mugabe.

The accused allegedly insulted Mugabe in Shona saying, he did not support a party led by an impotent 89-year-old, who has no grandchildren and who chased away a man and remained taking the wife.

"Handisapoti musangano unotungamirirwa nengomwa ine 89 years, mudhara asina kana muzukuru akadzinga baba vevana akatora mukadzi wacho nevana. (I do not support a party led by an 89-year old who is sterile and takes away people's wives and children)."

This is not the first time Pamhiri has been brought to the courts for insulting Mugabe.

In May this year, he was sentenced to three months in prison, after he labelled Mugabe "a dirty, rotten old donkey", but he appealed against both sentence and conviction.

Pamhirwa was remanded out of custody to September 20.
