The Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial leadership has ordered sugar cane growing giant Tongaat Hullet to immediately surrender over 6 000 hectares of cane plantations at Triangle that will be allocated to landless people across the province.
The move to order the cessation of cane plantations came after an audit revealed that the company had for years deliberately under-declared the size of its fields at Hippo Valley and Triangle to Government.
Tongaat Hullet which, also owns sugar mills at Triangle and Hippo Valley Estates had been claiming that their estates were over 29 000ha but a forensic audit by Government revealed that the size of the firm's plantations measured well over 35 000ha.
Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial chairman Lovemore Matuke on Tuesday said the party's provincial co-ordinating committee had unanimously agreed that the excess land owned by Tongaat Hullet be immediately parcelled out to landless people.
Matuke said the allocation of the 6 000ha of cane plantations would start immediately. The provincial co-ordinating commitee of Zanu-PF unanimously agreed that Tongaat Hullet erred by under-declaring the size of its cane plantations.
