Mount Pleasant MDC-T councillor, Bernard Manyenyeni, has been elected Harare mayor, beating Zanu-PF's Musatye Gwasira by a margin of 31 votes.
Manyenyeni took over Harare's top job yesterday from Muchadeyi Masunda after being voted for by 38 elected councillors against seven who voted for the Zanu-PF councillor during council's inaugural meeting at Town House.
An elated Manyenyeni said his major thrust will be to ensure that service delivery is improved with water provision, housing and road rehabilitation being his key focus.
"I look forward to leading one united team of councillors who are all in it together. I will not be excited to see 38/7 in every resolution," he said.
"The pressures in this city are immense and we will consult widely and engage fully."
The MDC-T had nominated Obert Gutu, outgoing Justice deputy minister for the mayoral post but he failed to land the city's top job after Local Government minister, Ignatius Chombo, said only elected councillors could be mayors.
