The Zimbabwe Association for Community Radio Stations (ZACRAS) has called for the removal of obstacles hindering women from participating towards the development of the country.

"As the world commemorates this year's International Women's Day, on the 8th of March 2014, under the theme ‘Equality for women is progress for all,' ZACRAS takes time to acknowledge the contribution by women, the world over, in seeking to influence local and national development processes," the organisation said.

"The International Women's Day symbolises an occasion for us to take stock of the journey travelled by women in their struggle for equality, peace and development. On this day, ZACRAS therefore takes time to recognise the ability and capability of women to transform society, if and when given an opportunity."

The organisation noted that while there have been efforts to empower women in various spheres, more still needs to be done so as to fully tap into the capacities and capabilities of women.

"It has to be recognized that, the obtaining scenario in most societies is such that there is still the existence of various barriers, amongst them patriarchy and violence against women, which hinder women's complete emancipation. As such, there is need for the redressing of obstacles which continue to not only oppress women, but also hold them in captivity," said ZACRAS.

"In this regard, ZACRAS posits that the existence of communication platforms which seek to accord citizens in general and women in particular, a platform to debate and discuss issues will go a long way in transforming societies.

"This will be achieved through nurturing and harnessing women's talent, expanding access to income opportunities and contributing to women's economic empowerment, as a driver of inclusive growth and poverty reduction.

"Rather than treating women as passive consumers and observers, community radio can play a pivotal role in aiding women to express their aspirations, and in the process empowering them. This stems from the viewpoint that community radio can contribute in making women realise their complete freedom and empowerment."
