The Crime Consultative Forum in Marondera has commended the local community for helping the police in fighting crime after a thief who had terrorised several shops in Marondera was arrested.
28-year old Shingirayi Pote, who had the habit of gaining entry through roofs to steal from shops, was arrested in typical movie style after a trap was set up with the guards taking turns to hide in the ceiling for more than a month waiting for him to pounce.
On the fateful day, Pote was arrested with cigarettes worth US$4000 in the middle of the night on top of the roof.
He has since been convicted by Marondera magistrate, Jabulani Mzinyathi and sentenced to 15 months in prison.
The Chairperson of the Marondera Crime Consultative Committee, Mr Dunnymore Mutyambizi has commended the initiative by the local community and the security companies for working together to fight crime.
Mr Paddington Zvayi, who was part of the team which set a trap to arrest the culprit, said the thief had caused many shop owners sleepless nights as he would sneak through the roof using an entrance at the back of the shop and hide in the ceiling after removing an asbestos sheet and steal at night.
