The President and First Secretary of Zanu-PF Robert Mugabe has castigated corrupt youth leaders who are extorting money from the general public using the names of party leaders.
Officially opening the first meeting of the national assembly of the youth league held after the 2014 6th National People's Congress President Mugabe said youth leaders should stop corrupt tendencies and be responsible and disciplined.
He challenged them to aspire to do great things for the nation and their families.
Mugabe said in Africa corruption has opened doors for western countries and Europe to loot resources, a problem he said should be dealt with by member countries.
President Mugabe also told the youth leaders that it is now time for them to start preparing for the 2018 elections by luring first time voters to join the party and giving them voter education, encouraging them to participate in the elections.
He also took a swipe at the late Amos Midzi for failing to progress in his political carrier.
He compared this to the opportunism of MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Turning to the challenges facing the youths,Mugabe said government is aware of them, including difficulties in acquiring land and establishing business ventures.
He, however, challenged the youths to organise themselves into groups for the purpose of accessing land for programmes and projects, adding that the party leadership has put in place a committee to give practical answers to youths problems.
Since independence the Zanu-PF government has made several interventions aimed at empowering the youths such as scholarship and cadetship programmes, as well as vocational training to provide youths with relevant technical and entrepreneur skills.
The Zanu-PF youth league national assembly meeting was attended by senior party officials, the youth national executives and heads of departments.
