A Mvurwi woman is living in trauma after giving birth to a child with a rare condition of genital ambiguity.

The parents cannot tell whether the child is male or female and doctors say there is an urgent need to carry out tests to establish the dominant hormones before a corrective operation can be conducted.

The mother dresses the child in boys' clothes but even she is not sure whether the child is really male.

The mother says she noticed the abnormalities when the child was one and half years old.

The size of what looked like a make organ is not proportional to the age of the child and female features are also visible while other critical components of a male organ are missing.

As a mother, she says she is in a mental torture.

The child's father said doctors have recommended that laboratory tests be conducted to ascertain the correct gender of the baby.

About US$400 is needed for the tests and the family is appealing to well wishers to help carry out the initial stage.

A research by the Intersex Society of North America recommended that tests must be conducted to establish the gender of the baby as merely labelling the baby male or female is not enough.
