Police have arrested 9 suspected smugglers at a tollgate along the Harare-Masvingo Road after they found them in possession of copper cables worth over $14 000.
Detectives from the CID Border Control Unit, acting on a tip off, arrested the suspects who were aboard a South African bound bus, Citiliner. 4 of the 9 suspects were Citiliner workers, who were on the bus at the time of the arrest and were reportedly fully aware of their illegal cargo.
The 4 Citiliner workers allegedly identified their 5 accomplices. CID Border Control Unit Harare Regional co-ordinator Detective Chief Inspector Jameson Magodora said investigations were still in progress.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated event, 7 vendors, among them 4 blind men, who were being accused of assaulting 4 policemen at the Harare Licence Inspectorate, were yesterday acquitted. Magistrate Gamuchirai Siwardi cleared them of the charges at the close of the State case due to lack of incriminating evidence. Siwardi said the State had failed to prove its case beyond
any reasonable doubt
