#thisgown protesters' trial date set

Three Harare men who staged a demonstration in the city centre early this month wearing graduation gowns have appeared in court on allegations of hitting a police officer with a brick before taking away his shoes.
Tinashe Wellington Macharika (33), Aleck Nakomo (21) and Chaponda Ndlovu (36) are facing charges of assault or resisting arrest. Their trial date was set for August 16.
The trio appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Jessie Kufa last Friday and were each granted $50 bail.
They are represented by their lawyer Mr Jeremiah Bhamu.
Prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on August 3 this year, around 2pm, at the intersection of Nelson Mandela Avenue and Angwa Street in Harare, the trio was part of a group of demonstrators.
Macharika tried to trip the police officer to the ground, and Nakomo threw a brick at him but missed.
It is alleged that Ndlovu threw another brick at the police officer and hit him on the back.
He fell down and Macharika took off the police officer's brown shoes.
The court heard that police officer crawled to a nearby pharmacy to seek refuge, and he was rescued by Austin Chipere, who went on to recover the shoes from the accused.
