The Zanu PF leadership in Binga has called for the opening of a border post in the district to facilitate cross border trade and allow people to link with their relatives on the Zambian side.
The call comes amid concerns that Zimbabwe is lagging behind Zambia where a border post has already been opened to link its people to Zimbabwe through Binga centre.
Zanu PF Politburo member, Samuel Mugande said they have held meetings with stakeholders to discuss the issue and a recommendation has been sent to the responsible ministry so that temporary structures can be set up while government raises funds for a permanent one.
He added that accommodation for immigration officials is already available in the district.
Mugande said the opening of the border post will unveil new business opportunities for the BaTonga people who have the majority of their relatives in Zambia.
Zimbabwe and Zambia have good bilateral relations and share similar political history while people on both sides of the border practice the same culture and religion.
The opening of the border post is also set to contribute to an increase in tourist arrivals in the district which has a number of attractions which include hot springs, national parks and a crocodile farm.
