SEASONED Bulawayo actress Sarah Mpofu is set to star as a lady of the night in the forthcoming feature film Sinners, the state run Chronicle has reported.
The multi-talented Mpofu, popularly known as Tashi from her role in the local soapie Amakorokoza, is part of the star-studded line-up of the actors in the production.
Sinners, one of 2011's most talked about and watched theatre productions, is set to hit the silver screen this year as it is in the process of being turned into a feature film.
Mpofu will rub shoulders with Nama award winner Eunice Tava, and vibrant up-and-coming actress Getrude Vimbayi Munhamo, who recently graduated from Theory X Media, as the three main actors in the film.
In an interview, Mpofu who plays Keresenzia in the film said she was excited to be part of the film with a star-studded cast. "It feels great to be one of the top principals in the movie as I am working with directors and actors who have made a name for themselves in the industry," said Mpofu.
She said the most exciting part about the movie was the kind of action involved.
"The most exciting part is the action involved in the movie, there is a lot of skimpy dressing and near nudity but I would love to thank my family especially my husband and children for the support as it demands deep action and concentration," said Mpofu.
She said Sinners is a movie whose story is based on the day-to-day happenings. This is not the first time that Mpofu has taken part in a Rooftops production; she took part in the plays Dambudzo back in the day and The People.
The film is written by Patrick Chasaya, produced by multi-award winning producer Daves Guzha for Creative Native, the film wing of Rooftop Promotions.
It will be directed by Nama award winner Patience Gamu Tawengwa. The film will also see the reunion of some of Studio 263 actors in Chipo Bizure, Yvonne Mangunda and Tapiwa Mavingidze.
Some of the other exciting names in the film are Tafadzwa Hanandah, Nothando Nobengula, Lovejoy Mawoneka, Norman Kanyimo popularly known as Kulighan, of the Kulighan and Calabash fame.
The only play in this year's theatre to have an age restriction of 18, will hope to carry the same success to film. The interest in the issues that the play seeks to address has reached fever pitch with the recent arrest of three commercial sex workers from Gweru, who were found in possession of used male condoms and are thought to be "female rapists".
The story is based on three ladies of the night who decide they have had enough of ladies of the night's nights and need to venture into more lucrative business and explore the potentials or opportunities in their line of business. They have had all types of customers (meaning drivers, workers or vendors) and clients (meaning ministers, business people or dealers) yet their lives have not improved in any way and much as they do not enjoy their way of life they have no other way.
From a brilliant idea by one of their own, a more vibrant project that is supposed to champion their empowerment and development is conceived and this is much better than their previous experiences, which saw them being lured, used or even abused and dumped by men.
Suddenly, they have the opportunity to be in business as they square up against their male counterparts who have always had unfair advantage over them, their mothers, their grand mothers and other women of the world.
A businesswoman recruits the three to collect sperm from their male victims. The shooting of the film which began in December is still going on.
