Deputy president of the Chiefs Council, Chief Fortune Charumbira, has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of Manicaland provincial chiefs' assembly chair and Senator, Chief Mapungwana (born Ananias Mapungwana), who died on Monday in Bulawayo.
Chief Charumbira dismissed earlier reports suggesting that the traditional leader collapsed during Independence Day celebrations in Maphisa, Matabeleland South, on Saturday, saying the late chief only became critically ill after the event.
In a statement, he said Chief Mapungwana attended the Uhuru celebrations in Maphisa and later travelled to Bulawayo, where he and other chiefs were accommodated at a local hotel.
"I want to set the record straight with regards to Chief Mapungwana's death to correct false information that has been peddled in the media," said Chief Charumbira.
He said the chief fell ill on Sunday morning after spending the night at the hotel and was taken to a nearby private medical facility for treatment after staff raised concern about his condition.
According to Chief Charumbira, fellow chiefs assisted in mobilising funds to facilitate his admission after the hospital requested an upfront payment.
He said medical personnel indicated that Chief Mapungwana had underlying health complications, including a heart condition and elevated blood sugar levels.
"He actually spoke to us at the facility, but by Sunday evening I was informed that he was on life support," he said.
Chief Charumbira added that although initial signs on Monday morning suggested improvement, he was later informed that Chief Mapungwana had passed away in the afternoon at a private hospital in Bulawayo.
He said the late traditional leader had appeared unwell even before attending the Independence Day commemorations, noting that his condition had visibly deteriorated prior to the trip.
