Dr Thomas Chauke to fundraise for this year's Great Limpopo International Cultural Trade Fair

CHIREDZI-One of the popular South African musicians, Thomas Hasani Chauke and the Xinyori Sisters of the "Shimatsatsa" fame, is set to perform for the first time in Zimbabwe, at fundraising gig, to be held at Chiredzi Rural District

Council, grounds next week, the programme coordinator Manatsa Kuzomuka has said.

The cultural gathering which is celebrating its fifth year, was in the past was dubbed the Great Limpopo Cultural International Fair, but has since changed the brand name to Great Limpopo Cultural Trade Fair, so as to make it a platform to promote trade between cultural groups from southern Africa which include South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority has since embraced the annual festival and now includes it on its National calendar of events. This year'’s event which is organised by Centre for Cultural Development Initiatives will be held from July 19 to 23 2017, at Boli, Muhlanguleni in Chiredzi.  According to Kuzomuka this year’s event will run under the theme; “The role of culture in food security and sustainable livelihoods.”

This is the second time the cultural trade fair is held in rural areas, and we hope to make the event bigger than last year. Preparation is already at an advanced stage and we hope it will be successful” said Kuzomuka.

The cultural trade fair will have diverse cultural products which include indigenous and modern sport, language conference, a traditional forum on food security, business dinner, youth career fair, exhibitions, cultural festival, and indigenous cuisines with the main purpose of doing business through culture in the context of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.

The award-winning musician, Chauke, who was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy, African Languages, by the University of Venda, and whose music career spans over 35 years, is expected to woo fans with his unique Xitsonga and Xigaza genre. Maheta kuhleva dance group from South Africa is also expected to perform for the first time at the Great Limpopo International Trade Fair. The show is sponsored by Malilangwe Trust, Tongaat Hulett, Baloyi Investments and others.
