Zacc distances itself from Beitbridge border crackdown

Uncertainty has deepened over a sweeping enforcement operation targeting undeclared goods at the Beitbridge Border Post after the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) distanced itself from the exercise, despite earlier indications linking it to the crackdown.

The operation, which has disrupted cross-border travel and left scores of buses stranded, is largely being associated with intensified inspections by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra), focusing on suspected commercial cargo that has not been properly declared.

Zacc spokesperson Simiso Mlevu confirmed that the anti-corruption body is not part of the ongoing exercise, contradicting reports from some sources on the ground.

"Zacc is not involved in the said operation," Mlevu said.

The denial has fuelled confusion over which agency is coordinating the high-impact enforcement blitz, which has significantly slowed movement at one of the country's busiest border posts and disrupted trade and passenger traffic.

Transport operators say some buses are now taking days to be cleared as authorities conduct detailed inspections of goods, including furniture and bulk items suspected to be commercial imports rather than personal luggage.

Authorities launched the operation last week, intensifying scrutiny of undeclared cargo in an effort to curb smuggling and improve revenue collection compliance.

Zimra officials have reportedly been inspecting items such as chairs, desks and other household goods to verify proper declaration, a process that has contributed to long delays and congestion at the border.

The situation has raised concerns among travellers and transporters over coordination between enforcement agencies and the impact on regional trade flows through the strategic border post linking Zimbabwe and South Africa.
