Zimbabweans have embraced the call made by President Robert Mugabe to boost the national blood bank.
The nation this Thursday joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Blood Donor Day which has been set aside by the World Health Organisation, with this year theme being "every blood donor is a hero".
In his address to the nation, President Mugabe applauded the 50 000 voluntary donors and urged Zimbabweans to donate more blood as it can go a long way in saving lives.
"I want to congratulate the 50 000 donors and wish to urge every fit Zimbabwean to donate blood and boast the blood banks," said President Mugabe.
In an attempt to increase visibility and entice more people to donate blood, the National Blood Services Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has put mobile centres across the country and has appointed celebrities such as Benjani Mwaruwari as brand ambassadors.
