Bulawayo health authorities have destroyed more than 700 kilograms of beef, including meat sourced from a major fast-food chain and a city police station, after it was deemed unwholesome and unfit for human consumption.

According to the latest Bulawayo City Council report, Simbisa Brands topped the list, with 494 kilograms of spoiled beef condemned last month. An additional 175 kilograms of uninspected meat from Queens Park Police Station was seized at a roadblock along Nkayi Road.

"The beef was unsuitable for human consumption and was condemned in line with health regulations," the report stated.

Other violations were recorded across the city. A different Simbisa outlet was found selling more than 20 expired food items, while Sai Mart branches in Entumbane and Parklands were also caught distributing unfit products.

Health inspectors carried out a total of 1,517 inspections last month, issuing 103 tickets for offences ranging from operating without shop licences to poor hygiene standards. The Central Business District recorded the highest number of violations, with 73 tickets issued.

Popular restaurants Maisonic and Ekhaya were among 18 outlets reprimanded. Maisonic faced multiple violations, including operating without a valid licence, lack of hot water, poor housekeeping, and absence of protective clothing for staff. Ekhaya was found operating without food handlers' medical certificates and a valid licence, raising serious concerns about food safety.

City health officials have pledged to maintain rigorous inspections and enforce compliance to safeguard public health.
