The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have arrested 748 suspects in a nationwide operation targeting illegal firearms, toy guns, and other dangerous weapons.

The crackdown, launched on 1 September 2025 under the banner "No to Illegal Firearms, Misuse of Toy Guns and Dangerous Weapons," aims to curb violent crimes linked to unlicensed weapons.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests in a statement released yesterday. "As from 1st September 2025 to date, the Zimbabwe Republic Police arrested 748 suspects for having unlicensed firearms, failure to renew firearms, misuse of toy guns and unlawful possession of other dangerous weapons," he said.

Comm Nyathi warned that anyone found contravening firearm laws would face strict legal action. "The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that any deviation from the regulations regarding firearms possession and certification is a chargeable offence under the Firearms Act (Chapter 10.09)," he said.

He urged the public to assist the police by reporting anyone suspected of hiding illegal firearms or engaging in related criminal activities. "Members of the public are implored to report any suspicious activities related to firearms on the National Complaints Desk number 0242 703631, WhatsApp number 0712 800 197, or at any nearest police station," Comm Nyathi added.

The ZRP said it plans to intensify the operation as part of ongoing efforts to rid communities of dangerous weapons and reduce violent crime.
