TWO members of the ruling Zanu-PF party have been fined US$100 each for defacing opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) campaign posters while five members of the opposition party are on trial for political violence.

Gaudentia Chabvongora was convicted of tearing posters of CCC local government candidate for ward 3 Takavingei Mahachi.

She pleaded not guilty but was convicted.

For the State Ronald Mugwagwa said Chabvongora (41) was found in possession of the posters she pulled down in the Beitbridge industrial area.

Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba asked her to pay a US$100 fine and gave her until Friday August 18 or face a one-month jail sentence.

The same court asked Ruben Mbedzi of Makombe Village to pay a similar amount after he pleaded guilty on charges of pulling down opposition CCC campaign material 60 kilometres northeast of the border town.

Mbedzi was seen in the act by CCC members.

In an unrelated case, five CCC members are also on trial on charges of political violence.

Oneday Madatsva (42) of CCC has been accused of assault after he confronted a youthful Zanu-PF member in Musoja Sports Bar and abusively asked him why he supported Zanu-PF at his age.

Drinkwell Muleya, Marvelous Nguluvhe and two other juveniles on August 14 allegedly disrupted a Zanu-PF gathering.

The two juveniles were released to the custody of their parents while the 3 other accused persons remain in custody as the trial continues.
