Government targets 1,350 new schools by 2029
HARARE - Government has announced plans to construct at least 1,350 new schools beginning in November 2026 as part of a nationwide programme aimed at eliminating Zimbabwe's school infrastructure deficit by 2029.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo said the ambitious initiative would be supported by funding exceeding US$600 million and is intended to improve access to quality learning facilities across the country.
"I am pleased to announce that Government is targeting the construction of at least 1,350 schools from November 2026, backed by over US$600 million, to eliminate the national school infrastructure deficit by 2029," said Moyo.
He said the programme forms part of efforts to ensure learners have access to safe, modern and conducive learning environments.
"Every child deserves a safe, decent place to learn," the minister said.
The planned construction programme comes as Government intensifies efforts to address classroom shortages and improve education infrastructure in both urban and rural areas.
Moyo said implementation of the project will commence in November, with authorities aiming to completely eliminate the national school infrastructure deficit by 2029.
The initiative is expected to contribute significantly towards improving access to education and reducing congestion in schools currently facing infrastructure challenges.
