HARARE - A reported communications blackout imposed during Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan's condolence visit to the home of late businessman Wicknell Chivayo has sparked discussion among mourners and observers.

According to a social media post by journalist Hopewell Chin'ono, strict restrictions were implemented when the Tanzanian leader arrived at the Chivayo family residence to pay her respects following the businessman's death in a helicopter crash.

The post alleged that journalists and other mourners present were instructed not to use their mobile phones, take photographs or record videos until the Tanzanian President had departed.

The reported measures effectively created a temporary information blackout around the high-profile visit, limiting the circulation of images and footage from the gathering.
Samia Suluhu Hassan reportedly travelled to Zimbabwe to console the Chivayo family following the death of Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy "Lulu" Muteke and others in a helicopter crash on September 30.

The visit drew attention not only because of the Tanzanian leader's presence, but also because of the unusual restrictions reportedly placed on media coverage and communication during her time at the residence.

The social media post claimed that the blackout was enforced from the President's arrival until her departure, although the reasons for the restrictions were not disclosed.

The reported measures have raised questions among some observers about security protocols surrounding foreign dignitaries attending private mourning ceremonies, particularly when such visits involve prominent political and business figures.

Only weeks before his death, Chivayo and his wife had reportedly paid a condolence visit to President Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan.
Claims regarding the communication restrictions, the reported blackout and details surrounding the visit could not be independently verified.
