The much-anticipated Egodini Bus Terminus is finally set to open its doors for commuter omnibuses and informal traders on Friday, marking the completion of Phase 1A of the multimillion-dollar project. The South African-based contractor, Terracotta Trading Private Limited, has faced several challenges, including Covid-19-induced lockdowns, leading to delays in the completion of the project.
Phase 1A encompasses crucial components such as the taxi rank, trader's stalls, public ablutions, workshop, filling station, and storage facilities. Terracotta Director, Mr. Thulani Moyo, confirmed that the phase would include 1,100 informal trader stalls and a 110-bay taxi rank, with a handling capacity of over 30,000 public transport users daily, along with associated social amenities.
The objective of Phase 1A is to address the chaos in the Central Business District (CBD) caused by the limited space for transport and vending. Mr. Moyo emphasized that the phased approach for relocating informal traders aims to ensure an organized and safe process. The first batch of 400 informal traders is scheduled to commence trading on Friday, December 15, 2023, in conjunction with the opening of the taxi rank. Subsequent batches will join in February 2024.
Applications for the initial 400 stalls will open on Tuesday, with applicants required to apply in person at the Egodini Contact Centre. Mr. Moyo urged patience, as there will be three intakes. Priority will be given to registered informal traders before the redevelopment, based on leasing criteria set by the developer.
Applicants should provide a police-certified national ID copy, a valid informal trader's license, and proof of residential address. The application process involves selecting a bay of choice on a first-come, first-serve basis. Successful applicants will be contacted within 48 hours and invited to sign a lease agreement at the contact center.
Upon completing Phase 1A, Terracotta Trading Private Limited will initiate the construction of the shopping center, marking another significant step in the Egodini Bus Terminus project.
