A 27-year-old man from Harare made a court appearance on Monday regarding a murder case from 2021.
Elton Pardon was remanded in custody until June 4 by Magistrate Dennis Mangosi.
According to Prosecutor Thomas Chanakira, on May 22, 2021, Pardon and his alleged accomplices, one of whom is already in custody for the same charge, assaulted Tinotenda Mandiyanike. They accused Mandiyanike of stealing seven pairs of jeans trousers and US$400 cash belonging to Masimba Makoto.
The prosecution alleges that the accused covered Mandiyanike's mouth to prevent him from calling for help and then repeatedly beat him with electric cables, car jumpers, and their fists.
At one point, they reportedly went to Mandiyanike's home and searched it for the stolen items but found nothing. Upon realizing that Mandiyanike was struggling to breathe due to the severity of the beatings, they allegedly took him to a medical facility in Ruwa, claiming they had rescued him from a group accusing him of theft.
However, the medical facility refused to admit him as he was already deceased. Allegedly, the accused then placed the body in their car and drove towards Norton, where they dumped it at the 62-kilometer mark along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
A motorist discovered the deceased's body lying by the road and reported it to the ZRP Norton Traffic, leading to an investigation.
Makoto was arrested on August 11, 2021, and he allegedly implicated Pardon in the crime.
