Chimurenga music icon Thomas "Mukanya" Mapfumo has confirmed that he was paid in full for two performances he was contracted to stage in Harare under a US$1 million deal involving businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
The shows were linked to Jah Prayzah's wedding celebrations, which have since been postponed indefinitely following Chivayo's death in a helicopter crash on Wednesday.
Speaking last night, Mapfumo said he was still coming to terms with the news of Chivayo's death but remained committed to fulfilling his contractual obligations once new dates are announced.
"I can confirm that I was paid in full for the work I was supposed to do and I will honour my contract of work," Mukanya said.
"At the moment I don't have much to say as I am still in shock with the death of Wicknell. May the Lord comfort his family and his loved ones."
Mapfumo, who is based in the United States, said he would return to America and travel back to Zimbabwe once arrangements for the performances had been finalised.
"I will go back to America and will definitely be back for the show. My team is making new arrangements with all the involved stakeholders and I think we will have a clear picture after the burials," he said.
His publicist, Cuthbert Chiromo, confirmed that Mapfumo's team was already engaging Jah Prayzah's management over possible new dates.
"Mukanya was paid in full and right now I am in touch with Jah Prayzah's management for new dates and definitely, Mukanya will perform," Chiromo said.
