Transport, Communication and Infrastructural Development Minister Nicholas Goche has challenged the private sector to partner Government in rehabilitating and maintaining the country's roads.
He said investment in road infrastructure was critical in enabling Zimbabwe to unlock its economic potential.
Minister Goche made the remarks while officially commissioning the Figtree toll plaza along Bulawayo-Plumtree high way.
"It is important that our road infrastructure is always maintained for without timeous maintenance these national assets will deteriorate to the detriment of our economy," he said.
The Minister said once the private sector partnered Government this would reduce the burden of road maintenance and the scarce funds would be channelled to other critical sectors of the economy.
"I want to take this opportunity to invite other potential investors to take up such opportunities on other roads, airports and railways sub sector," he said.
The Minister said he was satisfied with the Zimbabwe National Road Administration progress in rehabilitating the Plumtree-Mutare highway.
"I am pleased to note that the Plumtree-Bulawayo section of this road project is now complete and other sections of this road are on schedule," Minister Goche said.
The Government, he said, was working hard to ensure that 18 462km out of the 88 133km of state highways are rehabilitated.
Some of the roads are over 30 years old.
