A FORM 3 pupil at Milton High School in Bulawayo lost four teeth after he was assaulted by a group of prefects at the school. The attack is now being investigated by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

It is alleged that the pupil, Sam Makonese, was brutally attacked by a group of prefects who accused him of walking on "their lawn". The turf, according to the pupils, is strictly reserved for the prefects.

Pupils who spoke to The Chronicle said the school head boy (name withheld) led the group in beating up Sam last week on Wednesday at around 3.30PM after they called him to their room.

They added that when the pupil emerged from the room, he was bleeding and had lost four front teeth.

Bulawayo Provincial Education Director Dan Moyo yesterday said he had asked the school to submit a report on what exactly transpired and would only comment after receiving the report.

Milton School deputy head, Nosizi Muleya, confirmed that the incident took place, but said she could not give further details as she was not authourised to speak to the media.

Sources at the school said Sam called his parents after the attack and they came to the school and had a confrontation with the school authorities and prefects.

"Sam's father was very angry. He asked the teachers how they could let such a thing happen in their school yard. He also asked one of the prefects what right they had to beat up his son and knock off four of his teeth when they are just students like his own son," said a form three pupil.

Junior students from the school who spoke to The Chronicle complained of the abuse they receive at the hands of seniors, especially the prefects.

Last year Malvern Nyangani, a Sixth Form pupil, was excluded from the school after he was involved in a fist fight with a mathematics teacher.
