Police officer remanded for assault, robbery

A POLICE officer was yesterday hauled to court for allegedly assaulting a man before robbing him of his wallet and cellphone.
Wisdom Ndlovu, 19, who is stationed at Pumula Police Station, allegedly pounced on Promise Khumalo, 41, of Nkulumane suburb with three men who are still at large on March 14, a magistrate heard.
Ndlovu and his colleagues allegedly punched and kicked Khumalo all over his body before they searched him and robbed him of his wallet containing $110 plus a Samsung cellphone worth $60.
Ndlovu appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa facing a charge of robbery.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to April 13 for trial.
Prosecuting, Munyonga Kuvarega said on March 14, at around 10PM, Ndlovu was in the company of three men walking along Jason Moyo Street and 10th Avenue, Bulawayo.
"The quartet saw Khumalo and asked him where he was going but he didn't respond," said Kuvarega.
They assaulted Khumalo, stole his wallet and Samsung cellphone. The court heard that Khumalo chased after them screaming for help until he attracted the attention of two security guards, who also joined in trying to apprehend the men. Kuvarega said one of the security guards blew his whistle causing Ndlovu and the three men to run in different directions.
One Brighton Moyo, who is a taxi driver, saw Khumalo chasing after the Ndlovu and he stopped his vehicle and advised Khumalo to get into the car.
Moyo and Khumalo, the court heard, chased after the two men in the taxi but they disappeared into dark sanitary lanes. Khumalo went to Bulawayo Central Police Station to report the offence.
He was escorted by Constable Dandira and Chirenje to continue looking for the suspects.
One of the security guards, Previous Moyo continued to chase after Ndlovu who then jumped over a security metal bar at the Bulawayo City Hall.
The court heard Previous found Ndlovu lying down on the lawn trying to hide.
He apprehended him with the assistance of two Bulawayo City Council (BCC) security guards who were manning the area.
Khumalo arrived at the scene in the company of Dandira and Chirenje, leading to Ndlovu's arrest.
The total value of the stolen property and cash was $170.
Nothing was recovered.
