The National University of Science and Technology (Nust) has reacted with shock to claims that vice-chancellor Lindela Ndlovu was dead drunk at Lawton Hikwa's funeral service on Wednesday.
NewsDay claimed today that Ndlovu, who is known to be diabetic 'caused a stir' at the funeral service of renowned academic, Lawton Hikwa, after he took to the podium in a suspected drunken stupor'.
The publication said "The vice-chancellor was initially unintelligible when he took to the podium, delaying the service by more than 20 minutes".
However, NUST officials have rubbished the claims.
"Professor Ndlovu suffered what in medical terms is called 'hypoglycaemic attack' wrote Felix Fandyroy Moyo, director Communication and Marketing in a leaked letter from the university.
"This is caused by very low sugar levels in the body. Professor Ndlovu is diabetic. When one is under the attack, one feels very hot because one's body temperature also shoots up. As you know, high body temperatures may lead to hallucinations.
"That is why umuntu ole fever or ole malaria 'ewumana' if their body temperature is not properly managed.
"For the record, I want you to know that Prof. Ndlovu has not taken any alcoholic drinks for the past three weeks or so. The doctor put him on a strict vegetarian diet and banned him from taking alcohol.
"He has followed that regime as ordered by the doctor. Armed with this medical report and the knowledge of the alcohol-free lifestyle that he now leads, the allegation that he was drunk could easily become fertile ground for litigation.
Moyo said Ndlovu was at Hikwa's house from about 1.45pm up to the time of going to church.
"He was not drunk and he was not drinking. He was perfectly sober and was his normal intelligent self. He remained normal throughout the Requiem Mass and all the other proceedings.
"His slot on the programme was well after 6pm, more than 5 hours after he had been with us and therefore more than 5 hours without any food. The attack was sudden and he showed unusual agitation when he stood up to speak".
At 7:30 pm Ndlovu was attended to by a Dr. A. Mthombeni and returned to the funeral service.
Moyo said Ndlovu might be admitted at Mater-Dei Hospital soon.
"We will wait to get the details as they unfold. It is certainly heartless, expressly cruel and shockingly inhuman to concoct such damaging allegations against an unwell colleague just to be seen to be "breaking a big story" before verifying the facts".
