Thabo Mbeki Foundation mourns Prof Moyo

THE Thabo Mbeki Foundation (TMF) has mourned the passing of renowned Zimbabwean researcher and academic, Prof. Sam Moyo.
Moyo (61) died in a vehicle accident in New Delhi, India on Sunday.
The deceased is credited for his sustained research on land and agrarian reform in Zimbabwe and the wider Global South, contribution in African political economy and his leadership role in the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), among others.
Mukoni Ratshitanga, TMF spokesperson, said those who had the privilege to work with Moyo attested to his intellectual insight, his generosity of spirit and loyalty to the cause of the emancipation of the ordinary African masses.
"In addition to his humility Prof Moyo commanded respect because of the quality of his work and the honesty and integrity of the output. He resisted the temptation to serve as a mouthpiece and propagandist for established and dominant social groups," Rashitanga said.
He said for that reason, Moyo's immense contribution to agrarian policy and political economy deserved serious study, the better to promote an informed policy and public discourse as well as practical measures on issues that were of vital importance to the lives of ordinary people and the future of Africa.
Rashitanga said thus, Zimbabwe and Africa were poorer without Moyo's great mind.
"The academic community on the Continent is challenged to reflect on the obligation it has to produce more and more Professor Moyos. The TMF extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and relatives, the sister people of Zimbabwe and the African and global academic community among whom Prof Moyo was one of the shinning and guiding stars," said Rashitanga.
