A senior member of the MDC-T, Tapiwa Mashakada has said his boss Morgan Tsvangiorai derives his legitimacy from the party not outsiders.

"Dr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai is a leader. If you are a leader, you do the right things. The MDC was formed as an idea which remains alive to this day. As a leader Tsvangirai's legitimacy comes from the MDC and its structures not Zanu PF or non-MDC members," he said.

"The role of MDC members and supporters is to share and cooperate with Tsvangirai in the governance of the party. Strangers or outsiders have no role in the governance of the MDC. In relation to the MDC, and as its elected leader, Tsvangirai has proper power which means that power resides in him and he can act in his own name."

He said this means that these powers are also immediate powers. He can reach each party member directly. His deputies are co-workers who are enjoined by the mdc constitution to cooperate with the leader who is the custodian of the vision of the party. This is the liturgy of the MDC-the way we operate as a party," Mashakada said.

"Leaders are elected at a congress and our constitution gives the party leader to coopt or appoint where necessary as he deems fit. However his powers as party leader are checked by the National Council which is the highest decion making body in between congresses."

He said the day to day running of the party is done by the National Executive whose subcommittee is called the National Standing Committee which recommends strategic decisions to the National Executive.

"As an institution or organization the MDC is probably the most organized and structured institution probably second to corporate bodies. This is why it is very easy for anybody to criticize the MDC because you can only criticize what you can see. This is not to say that Tsvangirai is infallible. Far from it. As a human being he also makes mistakes and we correct him in that regard. He listens. Some of the criticisms i hear from outsiders are incoherent because they are aimed at attacking the person of Tsvangirai and not his principles or vision," he said.
