The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) is rolling out a special programme to ensure people with hearing impairments can access drivers' licences across the country.
A group of 20 students from Emerald School for the Deaf have started driving lessons in line with the TSCZ's special programme.
Speaking on the sidelines of one of the practical driving lessons for the students, Mashonaland Province regional traffic safety manager, Mr Enerst Muchena said all people with hearing impairments can now take drivers licences and they are working towards training driving instructors and the Vehicle Examination Department to ensure the process becomes smooth.
Chairperson of the Traffic Safety Club at Emerald Hill School, Rujeko Hwenhira who is also the junior member of parliament for special constituency said deaf people have got rights to use the roads just like all other citizens and their rights must be respected by putting mechanisms that ensures they do so.
The TSCZ continues to train their staff members on sign language and in April 11 members from different provinces were presented with the sign language certificates.
