NINE Mozambicans who were arrested for illegally entering the country through Beitbridge Border Post were on Monday each fined $20 or 30 days in jail.
Samba Sithole (27), Itai Mtisi (20), Nesbert Gwenzi (22), Justin Beukwa (24), Samson Gwenzi (54), Hardlife Makhuyana (24), Lincon Mubvumbi (30), Bongani Mulambo (25) and Lovemore Mulambo (20), all from Chipangabera area in Mozambique, were convicted on their own pleas of guilty to contravening Section 36 (1) as read with Section 12 (1) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 4:02 by Beitbridge magistrate Mr Carrington Karidzagundi.
The prosecutor, Mr Marvelous Chikomo, said on an unknown date this year, the nine Mozambicans used undesignated entry points along the Limpopo River to illegally cross into South Africa.
The court heard that on 3 February, they arrived at Beitbridge Border Post en-route to Mozambique and their car, a South African registered Toyota Hilux, driven by umalayitsha was intercepted by police.
As a routine immigration formality, the Mozambicans were asked to produce their passports and they failed to do so leading to their arrest.
The driver of the car which was ferrying them, Richard Mauta Jovo (38), of Bulawayo also appeared in court the same day.
He was fined R2 000 or 90 days. Jovo was convicted on his own plea of guilty to contravening a section of the Immigration Act (assisting border jumpers).
The court heard that Jovo assisted the border jumpers from Mozambique to illegally cross the border.
