Sources say Mnangagwa is in South Africa. Police in Mutare have leaked a radio communication which confirms that they were on Tuesday ordered to stop him leaving the country for Mozambique.

The South African government was reported to have earlier denied that Mnangagwa had applied for state asylum in the country, neither was he in the country.

"Emmerson Mnangagwa is in Pretoria. He is presently trying to pretend that there is a political stalemate in Zimbabwe. He is asking some ZNA allies of his to enact the stalemate so that SADC and AU will be forced to intervene and negotiate his return and safety," a renowned political activist has Dinizulu Mbiko Macaphulana revealed.

"This is a wrong move in my view. To dramatise a national crisis in order to seek continental support and protection for his person and secure ill-gotten wealth can work in West Africa, not in Southern Africa.

"This genocidist will be humbled," concluded Macaphulana.

Mutsvangwa also indicated that Mnangagwa was safe and en route to South Africa during a media briefing.

Mutsvangwa refered questions to Mnangagwa's family.

"Ask his family," retorted Mutsvangwa who addressed a press conference in South Africa Wednesday where indicated that war veterans had sacked Mugabe from Zanu PF in the aftermath of Mnangagwa's expulsion.

"He is not in China. Those claims are from enemies of progress," said the family member.

Sacked vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Wednesday he had fled the country as he issued a direct challenge to long-ruling President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace.

It is unclear as to where Mnangagwa is exiled with some reports indicating that the once feared 'Ngwena' is in China. A top military officer said that ousted Mnangagwa has arrived in China after fleeing via Mozambique. It is not clear whether the Mnangagwa met Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) general Constantino Chiwenga who was in that country on government business.

Mnangagwa was the leading contender to succeed Mugabe, 93, but his abrupt removal appeared to clear the way for the president's wife Grace to take over as president.

Mnangagwa had been one of the president's closet allies since Mugabe took power in 1980 after leading the fight against British rule.

He was sacked on Monday after a bitter clash with the president and his wife Grace, with Mugabe's spokesperson accusing him of "disloyalty, disrespect, deceitfulness and unreliability".
