FORMER Premier Soccer League chairman Twine Phiri, who is shuttling between his home and court an average of three times a week over a maintenance default charge backdated to 2014 yesterday hit back at his ex-wife Keresiya, describing her as an ungrateful woman, who always reports him to the police despite receiving money.

Phiri, who is accused of defaulting on paying $9 750 in school fees told magistrate Amanda Muridzo that he would give his ex-wife the money for the children's school fees and uniforms, but she converted it to her own use.

"I gave her more than $7 000 for school fees and only to receive a call from the school over non-payment of fees," a distraught Phiri said in court.

"I have proof that she did not pay the fees and I had to go to the school and make a payment plan so that my children attend school. I love my children and I am a responsible father to the extent that I even provide for my first-born child who had since been discharged from receiving maintenance since he is an adult."

He added: "I even sent him abroad to study, but I was shocked that on the day I went with him to South Africa to bid him farewell, she sneaked back from the airport and reported me to the police for default despite the financial strain I incurred sending the child abroad."

The former football administrator submitted receipts for the said arrears. He further said he had since resolved to pay the fees on his own, so that his children stay in school.

Muridzo postponed the matter to March 19 for ruling.

A Harare magistrate, Lazini Ncube early last year sentenced Phiri to 10 months imprisonment, but he escaped a custodial sentence which was wholly suspended on conditions and was given an ultimatum to clear his arrears amounting to $24 000 by May 30 last year.

While sitting on four more dockets, Phiri was summoned to court on each of the dockets which had a total amount of $67 551 since 2016.
