The Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services has alleged that 78 police officers were injured and 1 officer died during the violent protests that rocked Zimbabwe on January 14.

In a statement on Wednesday the Ministry said, "In the violent disturbances of the 14-16th January 2019, there was a concerted attack against police officers resulting in one deceased officer and 78 injured."

The statistics released by the Ministry are as follows:

Harare 56
Bulawayo 16
Manicaland 03
Mash East 03

The Ministry further alleged that the protests were led by a violent gang which committed untold sufferings to citizens.

"The violent gangs did commit a lot of atrocities against fellow citizens. They robbed them, assaulted them, and stripped female police officers  as well as burn crime dockets in police stations amongst a raft of other crimes."

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Sunday denied that there are any citizens who were killed by the police and the army or raped and demanded that if such victims exist he needs to see their relatives and the challenged the rape victims to be paraded so that the whole world may see them.

The United States of America on Wednesday issued a strong statement calling upon the government of Emmerson Mnangagwa to cease the brutal torture of citizens and to commit to dialogue under a credible and independent mediator.
